Direct Access Guidelines
Direct access endoscopy
Certain patients may be eligible for a direct access procedure. These include patients who are:
Under the age of 75
Fit and healthy
Able to consent in English
No significant cardiac, liver or respiratory disease
Have private health insurance or be willing to pay private hospital fees
Please specify this in your referral and the practice staff will contact the patient to arrange a convenient time for their endoscopic procedure. Dr Selvanderan will review the patient on the day, prior to the procedure. Following the procedure, Dr Selvanderan will discuss the results with the patient and arrange the appropriate follow-up. A copy of the procedure report will be sent to you.
Indications for direct access endoscopy
Positive faecal occult blood test (FOBT)
Rectal bleeding
Family history of bowel cancer
Previous history of colonic polyps or bowel cancer
Iron deficiency (with or without anaemia)
Dysphagia
Suspected coeliac disease
Barrett’s oesophagus
