What is reflux?

Reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD), is a common condition that occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back up into the tube connecting your mouth and stomach (oesophagus). This backwash of acid can irritate the lining of your oesophagus, leading to uncomfortable symptoms.

Symptoms & signs

The primary symptom of reflux is heartburn—a burning sensation in your chest, often after eating, which might be worse at night or when lying down. Other common symptoms include:

  • Regurgitation of food or sour liquid

  • Chest pain

  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)

  • The sensation of a lump in your throat (globus sensation)

  • Chronic cough

  • Laryngitis

How is reflux diagnosed?

A diagnosis of reflux is often made based on a review of your symptoms and medical history. Investigations may be required to confirm the diagnosis, assess the severity, or rule out other conditions. These include:

  • Gastroscopy (upper endoscopy): A procedure where a flexible tube with a camera is passed down your throat to examine your esophagus and stomach.

  • pH monitoring: Tests to measure the amount of acid refluxing into your esophagus and when it happens.

  • Osophageal manometry: A test to measure the strength and coordination of the esophageal muscles.

Treatment of reflux

Treatment for reflux is tailored to the individual and typically involves a combination of lifestyle changes and medication.

  • Lifestyle modifications: These often include maintaining a healthy weight, elevating the head of your bed, avoiding trigger foods (such as fatty or fried foods, caffeine, and alcohol), and not lying down immediately after eating.

  • Medications: Over-the-counter or prescription medications, such as antacids, H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), can help reduce stomach acid production and alleviate symptoms
