Dr Shane Selvanderan is a specialist Gastroenterologist & Interventional Endoscopist based in Melbourne

Dr Shane Selvanderan graduated from the University of Adelaide in 2015 and was awarded the David Murray Scholarship for his Honours degree research and the Australian Medical Association (South Australia) Medal. He undertook core Gastroenterology training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and was admitted to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2022. He then completed two dedicated interventional endoscopy fellowships at The Alfred Hospital and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.

Dr Selvanderan’s specific interests include bowel cancer screening, luminal gastroenterological conditions, pancreaticobiliary disease and therapeutic endoscopy, but he welcomes referrals for all manner of gastroenterology and hepatology conditions.

His services include consultations in gastroenterology, high-quality diagnostic gastroscopy and colonoscopy, as well as a range of advanced endoscopic procedures including ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), capsule endoscopy, balloon enteroscopy, per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for achalasia and endoscopic treatment of large polyps and early gastrointestinal tract cancers with endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).

Dr Selvanderan is a member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He has published his research in peer-reviewed journals, and presented work at national and international conferences. He has also been invited to speak at conferences on interventional endoscopy topics.

He has a substantial public appointment at the Alfred Hospital where he trains gastroenterology fellows in advanced endoscopic procedures, and contributes as a member of the oesophagogastric and hepatobiliary cancer multidisciplinary teams. He also has an appointment as a visiting gastroenterologist at Eastern Health. He consults privately at Cabrini Malvern and at the Melbourne Centre for Gastroenterology, and performs endoscopy at Cabrini Malvern and Epworth Eastern.

Dr Selvanderan is committed to a collaborative and patient-centred approach, emphasising compassionate care and open communication. He prides himself on being a thoughtful, safe and evidence-based proceduralist who uses advanced endoscopic techniques to deliver the best possible care to his patients. Outside of work, he enjoys running, live music and spending time with his young family.
